TIM PYE ‘Printing Remnants in the National Trust’. In amongst the millions of collection items cared for by the National Trust – including over 500,000 books and manuscripts – is an intriguing selection of printing apparatus. In this presentation, Tim will provide an overview of this material and highlight its importance, not only for the Trust but for printing history in general. TIM PYE is the Libraries Curator for the National Trust, with oversight of the 170+ historic collections in the Trust’s care. He has previously worked at the British Library, Cambridge University Library and Lambeth Palace Library.
EDWARD POTTEN 'Exhibiting every mark of antiquity’: Dating the Rylands Apocalypse Woodblock’. Long considered the only surviving woodblock from a blockbook edition, the Rylands Apocalypse block has always raised typographic eyebrows. In this paper Edward re-examines this enigmatic object, resolving at last the question of its date and revealing in the process the story behind a transformative moment in material bibliography and in the genesis of the serious study of xylographic printing in England. EDWARD POTTEN was formerly Head of Rare Books at Cambridge University Library and the John Rylands Library. He currently combines academic work (he is Principal Consultant on the forthcoming AHRC/DFG Project ‘Werck der bücher’- Transitions, experimentation, and collaboration in reprographic technologies, 1440–70) with running his own consultancy business.
