Typographic Surprises! Edinburgh in Print

Book for this event can be made HERE.

Printing spread slowly through Scotland, and by the middle of the nineteenth century had become one of its most significant industries, with Edinburgh as an important centre for book printing, including for London publishers. Finished books, printed sheets and stereotype plates were exported throughout the world. Using maps and images, this virtual tour will visit some of the sites associated with the printing and allied trades, beginning with the origins of the industry in Edinburgh's Old Town. We will be able to look not only at the traces left by the city's 500 year printing history, but also at some of the sites associated with the allied trades – typefounding, ink-making, paper-making and machine building.

Dr Helen S Williams is the Honorary Edward Clark Fellow at Edinburgh Napier University, and has been the Honorary Secretary of the Scottish Printing Archival Trust since 2009. She began her career working in libraries, and is currently Librarian to the Library of Mistakes.
