Print culture and the book trade in the spa towns of the English Midlands in the long eighteenth century
This project focuses on the unique nature of print culture and book-trade activity (especially printing, bookselling and circulating libraries) in Midlands spa towns: the extent to which members of the trade balanced the demands of residents and visitors, the partly seasonal nature of the trade, and the contribution of print to the development of tourism and leisure. The initial focus is on Leamington Spa, and the research will then broaden out to include other Midlands spa towns.
