Ellen Lupton is a graphic designer, curator, writer, critic, and educator. Known for her love of typography, she is the Senior Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City and the founding director of the Graphic Design M.F.A. degree program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), where she also serves as director of the Center for Design Thinking.She has written numerous books on graphic design for a variety of audiences. She is a contributor to several publications, including Print, Eye, I.D., Metropolis, and The New York Times. Event details: 30 September 2021 @ 16:00 BST

Kaleena Sales is a writer, illustrator, and graphic design educator at Tennessee State University, an HBCU in Nashville, TN. Her research focuses on Black culture and aesthetics, and her recent illustration work has been selected for inclusion in the 2021 Communication Arts Illustration Annual. Kaleena is co-author of the book, Extra-Bold: A Feminist, Inclusive, Anti-Racist, Non-Binary Field Guild for Graphic Designers, alongside Ellen Lupton and a diverse group of other designers. Kaleena actively presents at national and international design conferences, including AIGA, CAA, SECAC, and RGD. Through her service on AIGA's Design Educators Community Steering Committee, Kaleena has advocated for a more inclusive view of design history through her Beyond the Bauhaus writing series. Russell Bestley is Reader in Graphic Design at the University of the Arts, London. He is engaged in teaching and learning across the postgraduate programme together with Research Degree supervision.Russell's areas of specialist interest include graphic design research methods, information design and British popular culture, in particular late 20th century popular and alternative music.He has co-authored and designed a number of publications including; Visual Research: An Introduction to Research Methodologies in Graphic Design (AVA Academia 2004, revised 2nd edition 2011), Up Against the Wall: International Poster Design (RotoVision 2002) and Experimental Layout (RotoVision 2001). His most recent book, The Art of Punk, was published by Omnibus Press (UK), Voyageur (North America), Hugo et Compagnie (France) and Hannibal Verlag Gmbh (Germany) in 2012.  He is also on the editorial board of the academic journal "Punk" and "Post Punk", published by Intellect Ltd. Russell completed his PhD thesis in Graphic Design in 2007, entitled Hitsville UK: Punk Rock and Graphic Design in the Faraway Towns, 1976-84, and has contributed articles to publications including Eye magazine, Zed, Émigré and the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern World.
