CLOSED: Print networks between London and the regions

LONDON AND THE REGIONS

18 & 19 July 2023 | Loughborough London Campus, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, East London

The 2023 Print Networks / CPHC Conference will take place at Loughborough London campus in Stratford, East London. It is fitting, therefore, that the event should take as its theme ‘Print networks between London and the regions’. This conference will look at physical and metaphorical book trade connections between London and the regions from the early modern to the present.

The theme may be interpreted widely and may include but is not limited to:

  • Printers, book sellers and publishers and their trading networks

  • The movement of printed materials between London and the regions

  • Relationships between readers in London and the regions

  • Transmission of knowledge, expertise and skills between London and the regions

  • Factors influencing these networks and how they change over time, for example the coming of the railway

  • Theoretical modelling of networks using big data or other quantitative techniques

  • Case study approaches focusing on individuals, families or firms

While it is envisaged that most papers will concentrate on network connecting London with Great Britain, the Anglophone world will not be excluded. It could, for example, encompass networks linking London with British colonial regions in North America, Australia, India or elsewhere. Papers should emphasis the practitioners of the design, production, distribution and consumption of printed material in relation to the British Isles. Papers may include the technology, typography and design; the people, printers, publishers and distribution networks involved; pricing and sales; and the buyers and readers.

How to apply Proposals for papers of 20 minutes are welcome. Abstracts of 300 words should be accompanied by a brief biography and sent to Catherine Armstrong by 31 January 2023. It is understood that papers offered to the conference will be original work and will not have been previously delivered to any similar conference or published elsewhere.

Publication Papers will be considered for publication in either Publishing History journal or a future volume of the CPHC series, Printing History and Culture published by Peter Lang Ltd.

Postgraduate fellowship A postgraduate fellowship covering the cost of attending the conference and assistance towards travel within the UK, is offered to a student whose research falls within the parameters of the conference brief, and who wishes to present a paper at the conference. Abstracts should be accompanied by a summary of the research being undertaken and a letter of recommendation from a supervisor. Applications for the postgraduate fellowship should be submitted by 31 January 2023 and sent to: C.M.Armstrong@lboro.ac.uk
