As many of you know, the Type Archive (TA) has relinquished its premises in South London. The care of the collection has been taken over by the Science Museum Group (SMG) and moved to its National Collections Centre near Swindon. The collection includes material from Stephenson Blake and the Monotype Corporation.
Monotype transformed printing and publishing worldwide. Its faster, cheaper, advanced technology led to mass market Penguin paperbacks and newly designed typefaces like Gill Sans and Times New Roman. Much of Monotype’s typographic and technological legacy is encapsulated in the collection, and includes both hardware, and paper archives
SMG has a statutory duty to ensure the collection is maintained in good condition and has commissioned Cultural Associates Oxford (CAO) to explore the next chapter for the Monotype collection. How might new generations use the collection? How might it inspire creative practice? How might it contribute to teaching and research? CAO is seeking thoughts, views and suggestions from across the international typographic community. Please could you take a few minutes to complete a survey about your potential interest in the Monotype Collection and, if you’d like to, give us your thoughts or ideas about how you might engage with it or bring it to life for others.
