If you missed Jessica Glaser’s talk on Beatrice Warde, May Lamberton Becker and Books Across the Sea, you can catch up here.

Beatrice Warde the publicity manager of the Monotype Corporation, was also known as the ‘First Lady of Typography’. This talk reveals an unknown area of Warde’s achievement, examining the Anglo-American book exchange, ‘Books Across the Sea’ [BAS] she founded during World War Two with her mother, the journalist May Lamberton Becker. Working together from each side of the Atlantic they created the Society to foster cultural understanding through books and counter complacent attitudes towards the Nazi threat.

Jessica Glaser is an associate Senior Lecturer in Graphic Communication at the University of Wolverhampton and partner in Bright Pink Communication Design. Jessica is working on a PhD examining the circumstances of Beatrice Warde as First Lady of Typography. She has written a number of books on design and typography, including The Graphic Design Exercise Book and is a regular contributor to conferences.
